World Book and Copyright Day 2016

Sekolah Menengah Awang Semaun today joined the world in celebrating World Book and Copyright Day 2016. The event was co-organized by the school’s English department, Library, Bahasa Melayu department and the newly established Iqra club. SMAS celebrates World Book Day annually by the English department and the library where past events included teaching in costumes of book characters, poster making, book exhibition, competitions and giant character drawing. This year, as part of the school’s literacy programme 2016, aiming to improve the reading culture and book awareness further among staff members and students, World Book Day is celebrated as a school wide event involving all departments and sections of the school.

The day started with the arrival of the guest of honour, Cikgu Marina Chek binti Hj Bujang, Acting Senior Special Duties Officer (Professional), Department of Schools, Ministry of Education greeted by all staff members and students in the school hall. Included as part of the invited guests were officers from the English & Other languages Unit, Curriculum Development Department, MOE; 17 English Literature students and a teacher from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong (involved in facilitating an English literature workshop for students); School Resources Unit, Department of Schools, MOE; Mufti Kerjaan Office; Brunei Library Association; PTE Sengkurong Library and Asfi Book World Sdn Bhd.  The event in the hall aimed at World Book Day awareness where teachers and students presented topics on book awareness. They included World Book & Copyright Day awareness talk by Mr Darren Taylor of the English department, My Favourite Book video by the Drama Club, Book reviews by the Iqra club and Bahasa Melayu department and World Book Day Celebration Around The World by students of SMAS (Syarif Ad of 11C, Rohana and Haziq of 11D). The opening event also exercised Jawi reading by everyone in the hall led by the school’s principal, Cikgu Hj Jafri bin Hj Suhaili.

As part of the celebration, the English department together with the library and book club launched 2016 book donation where the first 30 who donate received brownies thanks to the book club member Cikgu Khairunnisa Ismail. The book donation launching, which was officiated by the guest of honour, was held at the exhibition area of the school after the event in the hall. The guest of honour, Cikgu Marina Chek, personally donated $200 in cash which was later spent on books at the school exhibition. These books will be kept in the school’s reference section for all members of the school to use.

Also as part of the donation, the curriculum development department, MOE, donated more than 200 books to the school’s literacy programme. Donations also came from Mufti Kerajaan office, Brunei Library Association and Asfi Book World Sdn Bhd. All books donated will be used in the school’s literacy programme such as silent reading, library periods, class reading activities among others. Teachers and students were also seen donating books for the cause. The school hopes that with the collection of books, teachers and students will have a library of various books to read easily accessible at any time.

Later on the day, the guest of honour and invited guests visited the exhibition booths which included exhibitions by Mufti Kerajaan office, Brunei Library Association and Asfi Book World Sdn Bhd. Exhibitions also included book exhibitions by the school library, world book project showcase by the Functional English & Communication students, PEKA, Iqra club and Prynsa project.

The school then held parallel activities organized by all departments throughout the school grounds which was visited by the guest of honour and the invited guests. Among the activities were cooking by instructions by the pra-vocational students, reading camp by the Maths department, book cover poster designing by the BTEC department and “Read, Dig & Share” by the Science department. The school counsellors also took part in the activities holding a book awareness talk for all year 11 students with the hope that books will help them improve their revision.

The World Book & Copyright Day 2016 celebration is only one of the many programmes the school is holding this  year as part of our literacy programme 2016. Throughout the year, we will be holding staff development and activities all focussing on improving the reading culture and literacy in the school.
